DECEMBER 12 // Friday: Embracing Your Role

Scripture: Matthew 1:20-23; Romans 12:1-8 “But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.’ All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ (which means ‘God with us’). Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement.”

Reflection: God gave Joseph a specific role: to name the child and serve as Jesus’ earthly father. It wasn’t the glamorous role—Mary carried the Messiah, shepherds and wise men got angelic announcements and stars. But Joseph’s steady, faithful presence provided protection, provision, and a godly example for Jesus. Not every calling is spectacular, but every calling is significant. God may not be asking you to do something that gets attention, but He is asking you to be faithful in your unique role in His story.

Reflection Question: What is the “supporting role” God has given you that might not get recognition but is essential to His purposes?

Application Step: Thank God for the specific role He’s given you in your family, church, or community. Commit to serving faithfully in it this week without seeking recognition.
