MARCH 17 // Week Two: Fasting to Seek God’s Guidance

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.

Acts 13:2-3 (ESV)

And when they had appointed elders for them in every church, with prayer and fasting they committed them to the Lord in whom they had believed.

Acts 14:23 (ESV)

The room is filled with voices lifted in worship. Barnabas and Saul are among them, praying, fasting, and waiting. Then it happens. In the stillness, the Holy Spirit speaks: “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

This moment would change history. Paul’s missionary journeys would spread the gospel across the known world. And it all began with fasting.

Fasting wasn’t an afterthought for the early church. It was central to their discernment and decision-making. Before sending Paul and Barnabas, before appointing elders, they fasted and prayed. Why? Because fasting aligns us with the truth that God is already guiding us.

We often crave certainty before obedience, but fasting doesn’t give us a roadmap – it gives us confidence in the One who leads. It reminds us that God directs our steps, even when the path ahead is uncertain.

Are you facing a major decision? A season of uncertainty? Follow the example of the early church – fast, pray, and listen. Let hunger drive you to deeper dependence. God still speaks. Are you willing to listen?

This Wednesday, whether you fast for a meal or the whole day, consider where you need God’s guidance. Fasting does not ensure the certainty of receiving such clear guidance from God and confirmation of direction as did Barnabas and Saul on this occasion. Rightly practiced, however, it does make us more receptive to the One who loves to guide us.
