Learning to Read and Study the Bible
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
2 Timothy 3:16-17
Our study, reflection, and memorization of scripture leads to an understanding of what the Lord is teaching us and draws us into a closer relationship with our Father. We pray that God will use these tools and your obedience to learn His word to equip you and encourage you onto the good works to which he's called you!
S.O.A.P METHOD
SCRIPTURE
Make an appointment with God daily to sit down and read the Word. Meditate and listen to what His Word says.
OBSERVATION
What do you see in the verses that you’re reading? Who is the audience? What words stand out to you?
APPLICATION
Take it personally. How can you apply what you just read to your own life? What changes do you need to make?
PRAYER
Pray God’s Word back to Him. If He has revealed something to you during this time, pray about it.
S.P.E.C.K METHOD
Begin by reading a passage of scripture and really focus on observing what you read. Then work through the steps below to draw out the message the Lord has for you in the text. After you've completed that, be sure to pray and ask God to help you apply what you've learned starting today!
SIN TO CONFESS / AVOID
In the passage, does God say something about sin? Is there a sin to confess? Is there a sin that I should avoid?
PROMISE TO KEEP
Does God communicate a promise for me to claim?
EXAMPLE TO FOLLOW
Do I find people in this passage that are a good role model? What character traits and which actions are commendable? Which are not?
COMMAND TO OBEY
Are there any specific commands given for me to follow. What does God want me to apply to my life today and this week so that I develop Godly character and habits?
KNOWLEDGE ABOUT GOD
What does this passage tell me about the Father or about Jesus Christ or the Holy Spirit? What is God like? What are His attributes? What does He do? What does He like and dislike? What is His attitude?
