February 18: Ash Wednesday – A Time to Return

Scripture:
Psalm 51:1-19 (ESV)

Devotional Thought:
Ash Wednesday begins the Lenten journey by inviting us into the deep waters of repentance. Psalm 51 is David’s honest prayer after his sin with Bathsheba, and it models the kind of brokenness that God does not despise.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.” That cry echoes through generations as believers come face-to-face with their sin—not to wallow in shame, but to encounter the mercy of God.

The ashes traditionally placed on foreheads today remind us of our mortality and need for grace. We are dust. Yet in Christ, we are also redeemed. Lent is a time to remember both truths: our brokenness and His beauty.

Let today be a time to return to God—not out of fear, but because He is the only one who can truly restore your joy.

Reflection Questions:
1. Where do I need God’s cleansing work in my life today?
2. What areas have I tried to hide instead of bringing them to God?
3. How does God’s mercy give me courage to be honest before Him?

Application:
Write out your own Psalm 51 today. Confess, surrender, and receive God’s mercy with an open heart.
