February 16: Preparing Our Hearts for the Journey

Scripture:
Joel 2:12-32 (ESV)

Devotional Thought:
As the season of Lent approaches, we are invited to slow down and examine our hearts. Joel 2 offers a profound call from the Lord: “Return to me with all your heart.” This is not a demand for external displays of religion, but a plea for inward transformation. The prophet urges God’s people to rend their hearts, not their garments—to show true repentance and longing for the Lord.
Lent is not about self-improvement or checklist Christianity. It is a holy invitation to return to God with humility, honesty, and hope. We return not to an angry judge, but to a gracious and merciful Father who is “slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” God promises restoration, renewal, and His Spirit poured out on all flesh. That promise is for you.
Let today mark the beginning of your return. Ask the Lord to begin softening your heart for this season. You don’t need to have it all together. You only need to turn toward Him.

Reflection Questions:
1. What areas of your heart have grown distant from God?
2. What does it mean for you to “return to the Lord” with your whole heart?
3. How have you seen God’s mercy in your life recently?

Application:
Take 10 quiet minutes today to sit before the Lord. Invite Him to show you what needs to be surrendered or renewed in your heart.
