February 11: Serving the One in Front of You

  • Matthew 25:34-40
  • Colossians 3:23-24
  • 1 John 3:16-18

Devotional Thought:

We often think serving has to be big, dramatic, and life-changing to matter. We’re waiting for the grand opportunity—the mission trip, the major initiative, the platform moment. But Jesus shows us that serving starts small. It starts with the person right in front of you.

In Matthew 25, Jesus says that when we serve the least of these—the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the sick—we’re serving Him. The people others overlook are the ones Jesus notices. The needs that seem insignificant are the ones He cares about. Serving isn’t about scale—it’s about faithfulness in the moment.

Paul tells us not to grow weary in doing good. Why? Because serving can feel thankless. You give and give, and it seems like no one notices. You meet needs, and new ones immediately appear. You serve people who don’t appreciate it, don’t reciprocate, and sometimes don’t even say thank you. It’s easy to get discouraged.

But here’s the truth: every act of service matters. Every meal you prepare. Every load of laundry you fold. Every person you listen to. Every small, unseen act of kindness. God sees it. And He counts it as worship.

You don’t need a platform to serve. You just need to notice the person in front of you and ask, “What do they need, and how can I help?”

Reflection Questions:

  • Who is the person right in front of you today that you could serve in a practical way?
  • Have you been waiting for a big opportunity to serve while overlooking the small, everyday needs around you?
  • How would your day change if you approached every interaction as an opportunity to serve like Jesus?

Application:

Don’t wait for the grand moment. Serve someone today. It doesn’t have to be big. Make someone’s coffee. Send an encouraging text. Help with a task. Listen without interrupting. Pay attention to the small needs around you and meet one of them. Serve the person in front of you like Jesus would.
