February 6: Work With Rest

Scripture:

  • Exodus 20:8-11
  • Mark 2:27
  • Matthew 11:28-30
  • Psalm 127:1-2

Devotional Thought:

God commands us to work hard. But He also commands us to rest. And for many of us, rest is harder than work.

We wear busyness like a badge of honor. We equate productivity with worth. We feel guilty when we’re not hustling. We convince ourselves that if we just work a little harder, stay a little later, push a little more—then we’ll finally get ahead. But we never do. We just get exhausted.

The Sabbath wasn’t a suggestion—it was a commandment. God built rest into the rhythm of creation because He knows we need it. Not because He needs us to rest, but because we do. Rest reminds us that our value isn’t tied to our productivity. Rest reminds us that God is the one who builds, sustains, and provides—not us. Rest is an act of trust.

Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He’s not inviting you to work harder for Him. He’s inviting you to rest in Him. To stop striving. To stop proving yourself. To remember that your worth isn’t found in what you accomplish—it’s found in whose you are.

If you can’t rest, it’s because you don’t really trust God. You think it all depends on you. But it doesn’t. God is still God even when you’re sleeping. The work will be there tomorrow. But today, you need rest.

Reflection Questions:

  • Do you view rest as a luxury or as a biblical command?
  • What keeps you from resting—fear, guilt, the need to prove yourself, or something else?
  • How would regular rest change your relationship with work and with God?

Application:

This week, practice Sabbath. Set aside one day (or even just a few hours) where you stop working and rest in God’s presence. Turn off email. Step away from projects. Spend time with family. Go for a walk. Read Scripture. Pray. Let yourself rest—not because you’ve earned it, but because God commands it and your soul needs it.
