Devotional Thought:
Excellence isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being faithful. It’s about doing your best with what you’ve been given, refusing to cut corners, and taking pride in quality work—not because people are watching, but because God is.
Daniel is a perfect example. He was a captive in a foreign land, working for a pagan king who didn’t share his values or worship his God. He could have done the bare minimum. He could have phoned it in. But instead, Daniel distinguished himself through excellence. Scripture says he had “an excellent spirit” and that his work was so outstanding, his enemies couldn’t find any fault in it.
Excellence in work is a form of witness. When you show up on time, meet deadlines, go the extra mile, and do quality work—people notice. And when they find out you’re a Christian, your work ethic becomes a testimony to the God you serve.
But here’s the thing: excellence requires effort. It requires diligence. It requires working very hard. Proverbs says, “Do you see someone skilled in their work? They will serve before kings.” Skill doesn’t happen by accident. It’s cultivated through discipline, repetition, and a commitment to keep getting better.
You don’t have to be the most talented person in the room. But you can be the hardest worker. You can be the most reliable. You can be the one people trust because they know you’ll deliver. That’s excellence. And it honors God.
Reflection Questions:
- Would your coworkers describe you as someone who works with excellence, or someone who does just enough to get by?
- What area of your work could improve if you committed to giving it your very best?
- How does your work ethic reflect (or fail to reflect) the character of God?
Application:
Identify one area of your work where you’ve been cutting corners or giving less than your best. Maybe it’s the quality of your output. Maybe it’s your attitude. Maybe it’s your punctuality. This week, commit to pursuing excellence in that one area. Work at it with all your heart, as if working for the Lord—because you are.
