Scripture:
Revelation 2:1-5; Hebrews 2:1
Devotional Thought:
Drift happens slowly. You don’t wake up one day and suddenly find yourself far from God. It’s gradual. Subtle. A few degrees off course that you don’t notice at first—but over time, those few degrees take you miles away from where you meant to be.
The church in Ephesus had everything going for them. They worked hard. They persevered. They didn’t tolerate false teaching. But Jesus had one serious concern: “You have forsaken the love you had at first.” Somewhere along the way, their hearts drifted. They were still doing all the right things, but they had lost the love that made those things meaningful.
This is the danger of drift—you can keep going through the motions and not realize your heart has moved. You can still show up to church, read your Bible, serve in ministry, and be a good person—while quietly treasuring something else more than God. The drift isn’t always into
obvious sin. Sometimes it’s just into distraction, busyness, or lesser loves that crowd out your affection for Jesus.
Hebrews warns us to “pay more careful attention” so we don’t drift away. Drift doesn’t announce itself. It doesn’t send warning signs. You have to pay attention. You have to check your heading regularly and ask: Is my heart still centered on Jesus? Am I still loving Him most?
The good news is this: Jesus knows exactly how to bring you home. No matter how far you’ve drifted, He is ready to realign your heart the moment you turn back to Him.
Reflection Questions:
• Where has your heart drifted without you noticing it?
• When did you last feel truly close to God, and what has changed since then?
• What spiritual rhythms or practices have you let slip that might be contributing to the drift?
Application:
Take time today to honestly assess where you are spiritually. Ask yourself: When did I last feel close to God? What has changed since then? Where have I allowed lesser loves to take His place? Write down what you notice. Then bring it to God. Confess the drift. Ask Him to draw you back to your first love.
