New School Year, Numerous Opportunities

Back to school. Three words that, when combined into one phrase, bring about many emotions–excitement, dread, anxiety, sadness, anticipation and so many more. For us in the student ministry, the EXCITEMENT of OPPORTUNITY is the emotion that continues to trump all the others. The Lord has continued to call to mind Luke 10:2 as we’ve been planning for and praying towards this year.

He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

We firmly believe this Truth that Jesus spoke and are praying for the Lord to send us–our students, leaders, staff and whole church body–out to work in the harvest field. We wanted to give you a chance to hear some students perspectives on this school year as they head into the harvest fields of their schools, sports teams, extracurriculars, and friendships.

We asked 12 students the same questions and here are half of them’s answers (stay tuned for the rest)–

  1. What school/grade are you starting?
I am an 11th grader at Berkner High School.
  2. What are you most looking forward to this school year?
I’m looking forward to seeing how my friends and I grow in our walk with Christ. Also, because of the leadership position I have in, I have a large influence on many people in the band program. I’m looking forward to seeing how God is going to use me in that to grow His Kingdom.
  3. Where do you want to see God move this school year?
I hope to see movement in the hearts of a few of my friends that I have been praying for for a long time. I am already starting to see them ask more questions, which is extremely exciting to see. I also hope that the FCA program at my school would start to grow. I have a few friends who are leaders in that group that I am confident will do an excellent job.
  4. Where do you feel God calling you to take personal risks this school year?
God has recently called me and a friend of mine to start a Bible study with some friends of mine. As we continue to plan and figure out the details of it all, I am expectant that God is going to do some big things through this. We hope that although we are going to start with a small group, that it will give us a chance to take more risks and invite other people to join us.
  5. What are you praying for this school year?
I am praying that as I get started with school, that I do not get sidetracked by band, homework, friends, and other things, but that I remain steadfast in my faith in God. I am praying for comfort and wisdom as my friend and I plan the Bible study. I am going to keep praying for the friends that God has put on my heart to reach out to.

  1. What school/grade are you starting?
I am a senior at North Garland High School.
  2. What are you most looking forward to this school year?
Since it is my last year of high school, I’m really looking forward to seeing where God wants to take me in this transitioning phase.
  3. Where do you want to see God move this school year?
Of course, I want to see God move everywhere this school year. But, to be more specific, I would like to see God move at lunch. At lunch, in a span of 30-60 minutes, a lot of conversations, thoughts, ideas, beliefs, etc. are exchanged and when I see the face of my school, I can already tell you most of that conversation is not about the gospel.
  4. Where do you feel God calling you to take personal risks this school year?
I know for sure God wants me to risk doing things my own way for doing things his way, with a willing heart. That in itself is a risk for me because in this transitioning phase where some major decisions are going to have to be made , I want to resort to doing things on my own and to my own liking, and perhaps other people’s liking and approval.
  5. What are you praying for this school year?
I’m praying for a willing heart. A heart that longs to go wherever the Lord goes and calls me to, despite how uncomfortable I may get.

Just as Tino said, we are so looking forward to watching God move everywhere this school year. Join us in praying alongside these students in their prayer requests and for the rest of our students as they dive into a new school year full of numerous opportunities to bring the gospel to every relationship.
