2024 DEACON NOMINATIONS

PROCESS OVERVIEW

Our deacons recently met and voted to proceed with the process of nominating, selecting, and ordaining new deacons. It has been several years since The Heights last nominated new deacons, and we are excited to involve the congregation in this important decision-making process.

Nominations for potential deacon candidates are now closed.

Now that the nomination period is over, all proposed deacon candidates will go through an interview and vetting process overseen by the deacon nomination committee. Final deacon nominees will be selected during that evaluation period and then presented to the church for a vote of approval at the annual church conference in September 2024.

Following the approval, the newly elected deacons will be ordained in October, marking the official beginning of their service to the church.

TIMELINE

THE ROLE OF A DEACON

We believe a deacon is called by the Holy Spirit, chosen by the church, and dedicated by personal commitment; therefore, the office of Deacon demands more than nomination and election by the church. It is not an office to be pursued or a distinction to be achieved; it is a service to be rendered and a life to be dedicated. Serving as a deacon is a commitment to a relationship with Jesus Christ and His Church. The deacon is set apart to serve. It is to that service, and the relationship which it involves, that man must commit his life. By accepting this responsibility and commitment in his life, the deacon sets new priorities.

Such a commitment carries with it also a responsibility to be an example. The man who agrees to serve as a deacon agrees to be an example to the limit of his endowment from God in all the life of the church. He is to be an example in spirit, love, devotion, and loyalty.

The Office of Deacon

The word “deacon” (diakonos) is translated as “servant”. Each deacon should live his life striving to glorify God in all that he does. A deacon should live his life striving to glorify God in all that he does. A deacon should distinguish himself by who he is, not the office he holds. Deacons at THBC must have a conviction to do the work of God, and to do it with humility and fervor. Jesus said in Matthew 23:11-12, “The greatest among you will be your servant. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.”

The deacon should exemplify by faith the fruit of the Spirit as Galatians 5:22 tells us, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. A deacon should utilize his spiritual gifts in order to better serve God. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 says, “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.”

The role of the deacon in the New Testament Church (such as THBC) must be on one of service. A person selected to serve should have demonstrated his commitment to ministry and his support of the church and its programs. He should undergird his pastor, despite what honest differences may exist between him and the pastor, live his life so as to demonstrate personal and public morality, strive to maintain an atmosphere in his home which is honoring to God, and demonstrate in tangible ways his love for God and for his fellow man.
