End of Year Reflection

A prayerful journey through the past year, guided by the wisdom of Ignatius of Loyola

As the year draws to a close, we’re invited to pause and reflect on the twelve months behind us—not with harsh judgment, but with grace and curiosity. This devotional is based on the ancient practice of the Examen, a prayer method developed by Ignatius of Loyola over 400 years ago. God has been present in every moment of your year: the peaks and valleys, the joys and sorrows, and even the ordinary, mundane days. This exercise will help you notice Him in unexpected ways and prepare your heart to become more attentive to His presence in the year ahead.

How to Get The Most Out Of Your Reflection

· Go slowly. Don’t rush through the questions. Linger, reflect deeply, and allow yourself the time you need.

· Gather your tools. Keep your calendar, journal, or photos nearby to help you recall significant moments.

· Trust the Spirit. If these tools become distracting, trust that the Holy Spirit will help you remember what He wants you to remember.

· Write freely. Use extra paper if needed. This is for you and your life with God.

· Share with others. Consider doing this devotional with a friend, spouse, or small group.

How It Works

This devotional is designed to help you reflect prayerfully on the past year and enter the new one with intention, clarity, and hope. Each day includes five consistent sections to guide your time with God:

Opening Prayer

Each day begins with a written prayer to help you center your heart and invite God into your time of reflection. Use it to pause, breathe, and become aware of His presence with you.

Scripture

A selection of Bible verses anchors the day’s theme in God’s Word. Read them slowly—maybe even aloud—and allow the truth of Scripture to shape your thoughts and stir your spirit.

Reflection

This section offers thoughtful prompts to help you look back over the past year. You’ll consider moments of joy and pain, growth and struggle, helping you notice how God has been present through it all.

Application

Reflection leads to response. This section invites you to take one meaningful step—whether it’s a practice to try, a conversation to initiate, or a goal to set—so that your insights lead to transformation.

Closing Prayer

Each day ends with a prayer to help you release your reflections to God and entrust the coming year to His care. Let this be a moment of gratitude, surrender, and renewed faith.

Take your time with each section. There’s no rush. Let the Holy Spirit guide you as you look back with honesty and ahead with hope.
