February 23: Led by the Spirit

Scripture:
Matthew 4:1-11 (ESV)

Devotional Thought:
Before Jesus began His public ministry, He was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. This wasn’t a detour—it was divine preparation. Jesus fasted forty days and nights, identifying with our humanity, yet overcoming temptation in complete obedience to the Father.

His first response to the enemy was rooted in Scripture: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” In the face of hunger, loneliness, and spiritual attack, Jesus clung to God’s Word.

Lent is a symbolic journey into the wilderness. As we deny ourselves and seek God, we discover how desperately we need His Word. Jesus models how to fight temptation: not with willpower, but with the truth of Scripture and full dependence on the Spirit.

Reflection Questions:
1. How have you experienced wilderness seasons in your life?
2. What temptations are you currently facing?

3. How can you root yourself more deeply in God’s Word?

Application:
Commit to memorizing one verse this week that will help you resist a specific temptation.
