Scripture:
Matthew 6:1-21 (ESV)
Devotional Thought:
As Jesus teaches in the Sermon on the Mount, He cuts to the heart of spiritual practices—fasting, giving, and praying. Over and over, He warns not to do these things for show, but in secret, before the Father.
Our culture prizes visibility and applause, but Lent calls us to quiet, hidden faithfulness. The point of spiritual discipline is not to earn favor or impress others, but to draw near to the Father in humility and trust.
Jesus reminds us that where our treasure is, there our heart will be also. Lent is a chance to reorient our affections—away from the noise and toward the Kingdom. As you fast, pray, or give this season, remember: the Father sees in secret, and He rewards in grace.
Reflection Questions:
1. What spiritual practices have become more about appearance than relationship?
2. How can I pursue intimacy with God in secret this week?
3. Where am I storing my treasure?
Application:
Choose one spiritual discipline (prayer, giving, fasting) to practice quietly today—without telling anyone but God.
