February 17: A Call to Humility

Scripture:
Isaiah 58:1-14 (ESV)

Devotional Thought:
As we prepare for Lent, Isaiah reminds us that true fasting isn’t about outward rituals—it’s about a heart transformed by compassion and justice. God rebukes empty religion that ignores the needs of the oppressed. He desires a fast that loosens the bonds of wickedness, shares bread with the hungry, and brings the homeless into our homes.

This passage calls us to humility—a laying down of pride and pretense. It’s not enough to go through the motions; God wants our lives to reflect His character. When we fast in humility and obedience, He promises that our light will break forth like the dawn, and healing will come quickly.

Lent invites us to this kind of heart posture. Not one of religious duty, but of surrender. God doesn’t need more performance; He desires transformed people who shine with His righteousness in a dark world.

Reflection Questions:
1. What “rituals” do I engage in that lack real heart connection?
2. How is God calling me to show compassion in this season?
3. In what ways can I practice humility this week?

Application:
Identify one tangible way you can serve someone in need this week—whether through time, resources, or encouragement.
