Devotional Thought:
Jesus turned the world’s definition of greatness upside down. In the kingdom of God, the way up is down. The path to leadership runs through service. The greatest among us is the one who serves.
The disciples were arguing about who was the greatest when Jesus stopped them and said, “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all.” Then He proved it. He—the Son of God, the King of kings—knelt down and washed their feet.
The world says greatness is about position, power, and prestige. It’s about climbing the ladder, building your platform, and getting people to serve you. But Jesus shows us a different way. He says greatness is about laying down your life for others. It’s about using your influence to lift people up, not to elevate yourself.
This is countercultural. It feels backward. It doesn’t make sense by the world’s standards. But this is the way of Jesus. And if we’re going to follow Him, we have to embrace it. We don’t lead by demanding authority—we lead by serving others. We don’t prove our importance by what people do for us—we prove it by what we do for them.
Serving isn’t beneath you. It’s the very thing that makes you like Jesus.
Reflection Questions:
- Do you view serving as something that elevates you or something that’s beneath you?
- In what areas of your life are you seeking to be served rather than looking for opportunities to serve?
- How would your relationships change if you measured your greatness by how well you serve instead of how well you’re served?
Application:
Identify one person in your life this week—at home, at work, or in your church—and intentionally serve them. Don’t announce it. Don’t expect recognition. Just do something practical that meets a need. Make their life easier. Lighten their load. Serve like Jesus served.
