January 30: Community Reflects the Gospel

Scripture:

  • John 13:34-35
  • 1 John 4:7-12
  • Philippians 2:1-5

Devotional Thought:

Jesus gave His followers a simple test to prove they belonged to Him: “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Not by how much Bible knowledge you have. Not by how moral you are. Not by how many spiritual disciplines you practice. By how you love each other.

The watching world doesn’t need another argument for Christianity. They need to see what the gospel looks like lived out in real relationships. They need to see Christians forgiving each other when they’ve been wronged. Serving each other without expecting anything in return. Sacrificing for each other’s good. Weeping with those who weep and rejoicing with those who rejoice.

This is what sets Christian community apart. We don’t love each other because we’re alike or because it’s easy. We love each other because Christ first loved us. We forgive because we’ve been forgiven. We serve because we’ve been served. We lay down our lives for one another because Jesus laid down His life for us.

When the church functions the way God designed—when we truly love one another well—it becomes the most compelling apologetic for the gospel the world will ever see. People don’t walk away from that kind of community asking, “What do you believe?” They walk away asking, “How do I get what you have?”

Community isn’t just for your benefit. It’s for God’s glory and the world’s salvation. When you love your brothers and sisters well, you’re putting the gospel on display.

Reflection Questions:

  • If someone observed your relationships within the church, would they see the love of Christ clearly displayed?
  • How does the way you treat other believers reflect (or fail to reflect) the gospel?
  • What is one way you can love someone in your church community this week that would make the gospel visible to others?

Application:

Think about your Growth Group, your serving team, or the people you sit near on Sunday. Choose one person and intentionally reflect the gospel to them this week. Maybe that means forgiving an offense. Maybe it means serving them in a practical way. Maybe it means going out of your way to encourage them. Let your love for them be so evident that it points others to Jesus.
