Devotional Thought
Real community can’t exist without honesty. And yet honesty is the thing we avoid most. We show up to church with our best foot forward, wearing our “I’m fine” masks, keeping our struggles hidden and our doubts buried. We think if people really knew us—the real us—they wouldn’t want us around.
So we stay surface-level. We keep it light. We protect our image. And we wonder why we still feel alone even when we’re surrounded by people.
James says, “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” Notice the order: confession comes before healing. You can’t experience the fullness of what God wants to do in your life if you’re hiding in the shadows, pretending everything’s fine when it’s not.
Proverbs tells us that iron sharpens iron—but that only works when there’s actual contact. You can’t be sharpened from a distance. You can’t grow in isolation. And you certainly can’t be known if you’re hiding behind a facade.
Honesty is risky. It makes you vulnerable. But it’s also the doorway to real community. When you have the courage to let people see your struggles, your doubts, and your failures—you give them permission to do the same. And suddenly, you’re not alone anymore.
Reflection Questions:
- What are you currently hiding from the people in your life that needs to be brought into the light?
- Who is someone you trust enough to be completely honest with about where you’re really at?
- What would change in your relationships if you stopped pretending and started being real?
Application:
Take one step toward honesty this week. Identify one struggle, one doubt, or one area where you’re not doing well—and tell someone. Not everyone. Just one trusted person in your community. Confess it. Ask them to pray for you. Let them carry it with you. That’s what the body of Christ does.
