National Places of Engagement
Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas
“52 million people travel to Las Vegas each year. During our short time living in Vegas, our hearts began to long for those people more than we ever could have imagined.” - Julie and Matt Harrison

Why Las Vegas?

This national Pioneer Place of Engagement offers The Heights family the chance to provide financial, prayer, relational, and team support with Lifesong Church, a new church plant in one of the fastest-growing and most unchurched cities in America. Efforts will be coordinated through Surgance, a Las Vegas-based non-profit ministry coordination organization, and Hope Baptist Church, a thriving church in the Las Vegas area.

What are the objectives?

  1. Be a key “start-up” partner with a new church plant called Lifesong Church to engage, minister, and reach out to the community.
  2. Work with Lifesong Church leadership, along with Hope Baptist Church in Las Vegas, in a mentoring partnership.
  3. Provide financial, prayer, relational, and team support as this church establishes a ministry presence in the community.
  4. See God reach individuals and families through the ministry resulting in both spiritual and numerical growth.
  5. Transform the Southern Highlands community through ministry and relationships with families and individuals.

What is the strategy?

  1. Realizing that one of the fastest growing segments of the population in Las Vegas is elementary-aged children, the primary tool to reach these children and their families is Upward Unlimited, an evangelistic sports ministry.
  2. Upward will provide opportunities to witness life change and “do life together” in the community for children, families, and volunteers who participate.
  3. Send Heights’ teams to the Las Vegas area for short-term missions.  These teams will have participants who have expertise in implementing and running Upwards programs, students with sports-ministry backgrounds, and participants who will canvas neighborhoods, communities, and points-of-interest to promote and share the news of Lifesong Church, Upward programs, and ministry-related events and programs.
  4. Partner with Southern Highlands Preparatory School to give back to the community through service projects that impact children and families.
  5. Adopt community initiatives through the new church and a non-profit organization called Surgance to partner in community initiatives to help the homeless, battered women/children, single-parent families, and more as needs are explored and discovered.
  6. Start a church to provide a place for people to hear of the love/sacrifice/and grace of Christ—then see members who embody and live out the gospel.

“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile.  Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
Jeremiah 29:7

Why Austin?

This national Pioneer Place of Engagement will be a strategic place for mission and ministry opportunities due in part because of three key relationships in Austin at Mosaic Church, Oak Grove Abbey, and Capital City Fellowship. We will impact strategic areas of ministry (neighborhood ministries, healthcare, education, construction, and weekday programs for kids) allowing The Heights family a reasonably close engage trip opportunity at a relatively low cost.

What are the objectives?

  1. Help to establish a ministry presence in the St. Johns neighborhood, in cooperation with the Austin ministry efforts, to provide additional health care, construction work in the elementary school in the neighborhood, and camps for kids.

Houston, Texas

Austin"I am so excited to see how God is going to use The Heights family to ENGAGE with the people of Ecclesia as we serve the city of Houston together."
Pastor Chris Seay

Why Houston?

This national Pioneer Place of Engagement will be a strategic place for mission and ministry opportunities for two primary reasons. One, because The Heights has a long time relationship with Pastor Chris Seay and the church he pastors in Houston called ECCLESIA. We believe God moves along the rails of relationships to accomplish His work around the world. Two, because of the vast need in the Houston area that remains in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, The Heights has multiple opportunities to serve alongside the Ecclesia community and other likeminded partners in ministry to serve the people of this city. Plus, Houston is only a few hours south of Dallas making the opportunities to ENGAGE in this city more cost effective and time sensitive regarding travel.

What are the objectives?

  1. Serve the city and communities in the Houston area where Ecclesia has a ministry and missional connection and presence through Hurricane relief efforts.
  2. Encourage and support the ministries of Ecclesia in the Houston area with workers, prayer and financial support.

What is the strategy?

  1. Enlist, train, and send at least 25 people from the Heights in direct engagement with the ministry in Houston during 2009.
  2. Provide direct support for Ecclesia and the ministries they are connected with in Houston for Hurricane relief efforts.
  3. Provide additional funds for special projects.

Occupations, skills projected for this Place of Engagement:
