National Places of Engagement
Las Vegas, Nevada
 |
| “52 million people travel to Las Vegas each year. During our short time living in Vegas, our hearts began to long for those people more than we ever could have imagined.” - Julie and Matt Harrison |
Why Las Vegas?
This national Pioneer Place of Engagement offers The Heights family the chance to provide financial, prayer, relational, and team support with Lifesong Church, a new church plant in one of the fastest-growing and most unchurched cities in America. Efforts will be coordinated through Surgance, a Las Vegas-based non-profit ministry coordination organization, and Hope Baptist Church, a thriving church in the Las Vegas area.
What are the objectives?
- Be a key “start-up” partner with a new church plant called Lifesong Church to engage, minister, and reach out to the community.
- Work with Lifesong Church leadership, along with Hope Baptist Church in Las Vegas, in a mentoring partnership.
- Provide financial, prayer, relational, and team support as this church establishes a ministry presence in the community.
- See God reach individuals and families through the ministry resulting in both spiritual and numerical growth.
- Transform the Southern Highlands community through ministry and relationships with families and individuals.
What is the strategy?
-
Engage Trip opportunities to Las Vegas:
Spring 2008 (Student Ministry Trip)
Summer 2008 (All Ages) - June 7-12
Training Dates: March 9th, April 13th, May 25th |
Realizing that one of the fastest growing segments of the population in Las Vegas is elementary-aged children, the primary tool to reach these children and their families is Upward Unlimited, an evangelistic sports ministry.
- Upward will provide opportunities to witness life change and “do life together” in the community for children, families, and volunteers who participate.
- Send Heights’ teams to the Las Vegas area for short-term missions. These teams will have participants who have expertise in implementing and running Upwards programs, students with sports-ministry backgrounds, and participants who will canvas neighborhoods, communities, and points-of-interest to promote and share the news of Lifesong Church, Upward programs, and ministry-related events and programs.
- Partner with Southern Highlands Preparatory School to give back to the community through service projects that impact children and families.
- Adopt community initiatives through the new church and a non-profit organization called Surgance to partner in community initiatives to help the homeless, battered women/children, single-parent families, and more as needs are explored and discovered.
- Start a church to provide a place for people to hear of the love/sacrifice/and grace of Christ—then see members who embody and live out the gospel.

“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.”
Jeremiah 29:7 |
Why Austin?
This national Pioneer Place of Engagement will be a strategic place for mission and ministry opportunities due in part because of three key relationships in Austin at Mosaic Church, Oak Grove Abbey, and Capital City Fellowship. We will impact strategic areas of ministry (neighborhood ministries, healthcare, education, construction, and weekday programs for kids) allowing The Heights family a reasonably close engage trip opportunity at a relatively low cost.
What are the objectives?
- Help to establish a ministry presence in the St. Johns neighborhood, in cooperation with the Austin ministry efforts, to provide additional health care, construction work in the elementary school in the neighborhood, and camps for kids.
- Encourage and support the ministries of our Places of Engagement in Austin with workers, prayer, and financial support.

 |
| “Within our first year of marriage we moved to New York City. After getting connected with Apostles Church and finding a place to serve, “I Love NY” means more than we ever could have imagined!” - Kristian and Katy Rose |
Why New York?
Apostles Church of the City, a group of like-minded people living in this national Pioneer Place of Engagement with whom we have partnered for several years, has been challenged to demonstrate the love of Christ to almost every people group in the city of New York. This relationship provides The Heights family virtually unlimited avenues to use their talents, skills, and love in ministry leading to life and community.
What are the objectives?
- Engage with Apostles Church to continue to increase awareness of the church in NYC.
- Engage with Apostles Church to empower, equip, and extend existing ministries and community relationships through strategic serving opportunities.
- Engage with Apostles Church to communicate love for and service to the city.
What is the strategy?
-
Engage Trip opportunities to New York:
May 14-18, 2008 (College Students)
July 29 - August 3, 2008 (All Ages) |
Distribution of materials such as subway maps, flyers, and other Apostles Church publicity and marketing products to help continue to increase awareness of the church. 33% of the current core leaders of Apostles Church came to the church this way.
- Participate in Outreach in the Public Parks such as Community Block Parties related to the multiple sites where Apostles Church meets.
- Meeting Immediate and short term needs in the city in strategic ways that dovetail with the need to increase a growing presence in the city. Some examples would be beautification projects with Public School #6 where one Apostles’ service meets, participation with established ministries to the homeless through a local church where a second service of Apostles currently meets, and working with Hope for New York through the coordinated efforts of Kristian Rose, coordinator of various mercy projects in the city.
- Creative outreach opportunities to the Upper East Side people groups that do not require a prior measure of trust such as feeding local firefighters and EMT’s.
- Training for Apostles’ people in specific areas that Heights’ people would have expertise in such as marriage counseling, financial planning, etc. that can be sustained by those newly trained individuals for further instruction and equipping of their own people.
- Two trips at staggered weeks in the summer of 2008 between the window of May 15-August 15 as well as the weekend after Labor Day with teams of 10-20 people each to fulfill the objects listed above.
