Sunday is Father’s Day. It’s a wonderful day. Of course if you are the father of small children, it’s a day you give your kids money you don’t have to buy you a gift you don’t need.
But you can’t beat Father’s Day. Your little kids crawl up in your lap … give you a hug … tell you they love you … and you melt.
Wives and students, you do realize the father in your home is pretty much a puppy dog. We roll over. Go fetch the ball. Work really long hours. Cut the grass. Put up the swing set in the backyard. Fix the flat on your bicycle. Whatever. We just want you to pat us on the head, and tell us: “Good boy. You’re a good boy. I love you. You’re the best dad in the whole world.”
Most of us know we’re not the best dad in the world. Actually, a good number of us feel like failures some days. But it is good to know that someone notices our efforts and appreciates what we do for our family.
So this is a great day. Bring on the ties, and the aftershave, and the hugs, and the accolades … and celebrate Dad’s day. Hey – yours may not be the world’s greatest. But he is the one God gave you, and he is worth celebrating.
Now Fathers, I want to invest a good portion of our time on Sunday morning not so much talking to your family … but talking to you.
To be fair, on Mother’s Day I challenged Moms to teach their children the ABC’s of the Bible … to read the Bible with their children … to help their children memorize the Bible.
So it’s only fair that I challenge you this Father’s Day.
My challenge to all of the Dad’s will come straight out of the Bible located in 1 Corinthians 7:13-14. Why this passage? Because we are in a sermon series that we’ve called “In Box.” We’re addressing some of the questions that people sent in to our in box. And one of the questions was:
“What does 1 Corinthians 7:14 mean when it says, ‘my kids are holy because I’m sanctified?’”
This is actually a really interesting question that has all kinds of ramifications for Dads and the influence God has given to each of us as we raise kids and shape our families. Join us this Sunday as we worship God, honor Dads, and celebrate that we have a Heavenly Father who is crazy in love with you!
God Bless,
Gary
PS...Know that on Sunday, July 4th we will have a special baptism service as our entire Heights Family comes together for one combined service at 10:45 am on that one day. If you would like to talk with someone about being baptized during that special baptism service, please contact David Rogers at drogers@theheights.org or call the church offices at 972-238-7243 for more information.
Deacon Nominations
On occasion in the life of a Baptist church (due to growth, transfers,
and transition), we need to add men to our deacon body. We are currently soliciting
recommendations from our church body. Read 1 Timothy 3:8-13 and Titus 1:5-9 for Biblical
qualifications for deacon servants in the church. Email recommendations to John Wills
(jwills@theheights.org) or mail your recommendation to John Wills, 201 West Renner Road,
Richardson, TX 75080. If you know of men who were previously ordained in other churches,
have been members of The Heights Baptist Church for at least one year and whom you would
recommend for vetting and serving in our church, those names would be welcomed and
appreciated as well.
